As Mine operators, we recognize the importance of operational efficiency and positive community relations. This is especially true in bauxite mining, where operations are often located near communities. This post outlines key strategies to enhance productivity and foster strong local partnerships.
Innovative Haulage: Beyond the Large Haul Truck
While large haul trucks have been the go-to for short-distance hauling in hardrock mining due to their durable trays, the bauxite industry can benefit from a different approach. This approach uses smaller, on-road trucking fleets for bauxite, sand, and other surface mining applications.
Why Small Trucks?
- Versatility: Smaller trucks are a useful alternative when the mined product has variable quality standards and requires blending from multiple smaller deposits.
- Safety: These trucks can be fitted with Rollover Protection Systems (ROPS) and cab shields to protect operators in the event of a rollover.
- Community Integration: Using smaller trucks creates an opportunity to engage local contractors and employ community members as operators.
Alternative Bauxite Conveyance Systems
Efficient transportation from the mine to the refinery or stockpile is crucial. While rail haulage and ground-level belt conveyors are proven methods, they often require constant maintenance and security monitoring. They can also incur additional costs when crossing public roads.
An effective alternative is the elevated wire rope conveying system. This system operates at a minimal cost with low wear and tear. Its elevated design helps it avoid unwanted attention and allows it to transport a fully loaded product over difficult, undulating terrain.

To further reduce transport volume, it’s beneficial to
crush and screen the bauxite as close to the mining activity as possible.
Fostering Community Engagement for Mutual Benefit
Engaging the local community isn’t just a social responsibility; it’s a strategic move that enhances efficiency, safety, and security.
- Local Contractors: Hiring local contracting companies to handle mining and hauling operations develops a sense of ownership and can lead to beneficial results in security, safety, and productivity.
- Local Workforce: Securing the services of community members to work in the mine can improve productivity and security. This approach has been successful in many locations.
- Security Monitoring: Engaging willing citizens from nearby communities is a successful method for providing security monitoring for ground-level conveying systems.
By combining technological advancements in hauling and conveyance with a commitment to social responsibility through community engagement, we can ensure mining operations are productive, secure, and a positive force in their regions.
