He is an advisor to the International Aluminium Institute and European Aluminium on bauxite residue management, use and remediation and technical advisor to Horizon 2020 ETN-MSCA REDMUD project and author of numerous papers, patents, conference presentations and book chapters on the management, remediation and uses of bauxite residue

Mr. Gaarkeuken has 40 years of experience in Operations, Technical Development, Engineering and start-up of alumina refineries. His experiences relate to the processing of bauxite ore to produce alumina at Alcan refineries and the design, construction and start-up of Alumina refineries. He has been involved in engineering studies to expand alumina refineries in India, Jamaica, Canada, USA and Brazil. Most recently he has been involved in the engineering of expansions of an alumina refinery in Brazil and was responsible for the start-up program and its execution.
